The Gordon Institute of TAFE

Studying at The Gordon was fantastic, the teachers were great and so helpful and also made learning fun. Mixing with Australian students was a great way to make life-long friends who were interested in the same things as me.

The Gordon has fully prepared me for employment. We not only learnt the vital massage skills but also business skills that have become essential for me as I have started up my own business in Victoria's Western District. Without the key business components that The Gordon offered this would not have been possible for me, so I thank them greatly.

Samuel designs cars, prints in 3D and learns to surf

Hi, my name is Samuel Pardi and I am from Venezuela. I came to Australia wanting to achieve a higher level of education and to have international experience in the design industry.

On my trip to these goals I started with 10 weeks of English for Academic Purposes at the Waterfront Campus in Geelong. I was eager to experience new situations and cultures, and I feel I was blessed for choosing an English course in Geelong. DUELI in Geelong offers small classes that allow for more interaction between students and the lecturer. I met very fun and easy-going people from different cultures that I still am in contact with.

I have to say that I felt sad to leave the English course behind because I was so comfortable there, and the staff were so friendly and awesome. However, starting a master’s was an important experience for me to start developing new skills that made me feel more self-aware of my abilities in the engineering field. For instance, I had to design the suspension of a university race car within a team, and coming up with a working solution and seeing the real-life application was a boost to our confidence. Now I am keener to have an opportunity in the design industry in Australia.

I cannot say my master’s has been an easy course but I like it so far. I have improved in areas that I thought were not possible to improve, such as my communication skills and my leadership skills. Of course, I have chosen subjects that I feel will have more impact in my career, such as Engineering Leadership. Right now, I am doing my engineering project on 3D printing of titanium, which is highly related to the aerospace and biomedical industries. I am also preparing to apply for an internship for Trimester 1 of 2016. I hope to get the opportunity to start experiencing industry-related projects and to start showing my abilities as an engineer, especially the skills that I have developed at Deakin.

With my previous experience in Venezuela and an internship in Australia, more and better opportunities are around the corner for new and challenging positions within competitive industries. Nevertheless, participating in research and development teams, and being able to influence others with my personality and experience are one of my short-term objectives. As a long term-objective, I would like to create my own company with some ideas that I have developed during my master’s, and also influence society with products that are sustainable and sensible to community needs.

Although studying is important, having fun and enjoying life is what motivate us. So I also decided to try to surf and experience that environment. Of course, some of my friends were having a laugh at me because I was falling all the time. It is not as easy as it seems. But I definitely enjoy surfing, and I am going to keep trying this summer.

I want to conclude this post by telling you that anything is possible. I come from a developing country with a poor economy. I did not have many resources but I have kept fighting for my goals. I have been working part-time, studying, practicing English every day, and I still have time to enjoy my weekends and get good grades.

For further information about studying at Deakin and to view the many degrees on offer, visit our international student page. Or ask us a question by visiting our international student enquiry page – we’re happy to help you get to know Deakin better.

The Gordon Institute of TAFE

I choose to study at The Gordon after a few recommendations. Studying the Diploma of Building and Construction, and the Diploma of Building Surveyor was a hard journey because I had to manage my time between the two courses, a part-time job and my lovely family. Now having finished and received my marks, the results are better than I could imagine.

The courses were well prepared and all the teachers ready to give the support students needed. The two years adequately prepared me for any work in the construction industry.

My time at The Gordon enabled me to further develop interpersonal and leadership skills, which has helped me in many aspects of my life. I feel very lucky to have been able to form some very close friendships through the course. Everyone had different skills and experiences to contribute, which was a great benefit. I feel grateful.

The Gordon Institute of TAFE

I still study at The Gordon, I chose it because I wanted to study Diploma of Community Services Work in the place that is accredited by ACWA (Australian Community Workers Association) and The Gordon was (still is) the only one in Geelong which could provide it.
I love being a student at The Gordon, simply because we have very passionate, skilled and very experienced teachers, who teach us the most important things about the welfare work, values and beliefs.

It is good to be part of a team, who also teaches you what is important in life, how to see from another perspective, how to critically think about things around us and be actively involved in the world. I am not working in that field yet, but I am sure I will be well prepared for employment after I finish my study. We are learning things that are relevant to welfare work and we are challenged and empowered at the same time - to learn more, to research, to be open to discover further and to build up our strengths and skills to become better workers.

Being the only international student in the class of 25 Australians is definitely a very good experience, especially because I have got the opportunity to improve my English skills, to get insight into Aussie slang and to find out more about Australian lifestyle, customs, habits, culture.

I wouldn't want it any other way!

Sophie Yang

DUELI

Hi, my name is Yang Ying and I come from China. I came to Deakin University to study and I am currently undertaking a Master of Landscape Architecture. Australia is an amazing country - from the moment I landed at Melbourne Airport, I was curious about my new home.

I feel lucky that I chose to study at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus because of the incredible views and the friendly people in Geelong. Prior to commencing my architecture studies at Deakin, I studied a ten week English language course at the Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI).

During my English language studies, it was really exciting that my classmates were from different countries such as Russia, Iran, India, Thailand, Philippines andVenezuela. I made many great friends – we studied together and shared our different life experiences with each other. The teachers were also very helpful - they not only assisted us in our studies but also found ways to help us relax such as arranging visits to the zoo and doing yoga classes together.

My time at DUELI was a turning point in my life because I learned new skills such as searching through documents and writing in English. For a Masters student, critical thinking, writing, and searching documents are all important skills. Furthermore, good communication skills are also important and having friends from different backgrounds has been a great help in learning about new perspectives, new ways of thinking and different cultures.

In my spare time, I like to travel with my friends and to participate in different activities. I have been to Lake Tyrrell, gone fishing, joined in the Zombie Show, took part in Run Geelong, enjoyed some volunteer work and travelled to other cities. By taking part in various activities, I feel like I am an active participant in society making a valuable contribution to the city of Geelong especially when I’m volunteering which involves giving up my time for the reward and satisfaction of helping someone perhaps less fortunate than myself.

I still have one year left before I finish my course and although my studies are sometimes challenging and stressful, I am confident about my future, since my life motto has always been ‘Study Hard and Play Hard’.

Kardinia International College

3 years in Kardinia International College give me lots of experiences. Before I came here, I was afraid that I would not fit with anyone. However, first day of the school, many students came and greeted cheerfully. I was very happy and felt more comfortable to talk with them. Kardinia has a wide range of activities for the students to join and make friends such as school clubs, school productions, house athletics, and so on. Also, by studying in Kardinia, I have not only learnt English, but I have learnt many different languages as this school opens for students from around the world. As in the school song, “Wisdom leads to respect and respect leads to friendship with the world”, Kardinia includes these three words in our everyday at school. In addition, as my family does not stay here, I have to stay with homestay family. They are like my second parents who help, support, and look after me as their child. They are the best homestay family ever. I have learnt so many things from them such as culture, custom, language, etc. Kardinia and my homestay family are located in Geelong where is very quiet and peaceful. It is totally different to my home country, Thailand. The traffic is much better, therefore it is quicker to travel from one place to another. Ultimately, I am so glad that I came to Australia and study in Kardinia International College. I will never ever forget this experiences in this school, this homestay and this country.

The Gordon Institute of TAFE

I chose to study at The Gordon because I had friends that told me a lot of good things about it. Apart from all the studying (ha ha) I really enjoy it. The teachers are just great. In Germany I never had teachers that cared for me so much.

I think it’s great that The Gordon offers free student services. I saw a counsellor when I started the course and that was fantastic. I would recommend students seek help if they need some advice or just someone to listen. The library is also fantastic! The guys there help you out and I love that it’s not a quiet place - you can eat there, talk with fellow students and work on projects.

The course has helped me find my strengths and weaknesses and with the help of my teachers, to figure out what direction I want to head

The Gordon Institute of TAFE

The Gordon Institute of TAFE was a study destination that I decided on hesitantly. Being a TAFE, I felt the practical approach and real experience would help me further my studies and career path.

The Gordon has surpassed all expectations.
At this stage, I can look back on that decision and confidently say I have no regrets whatsoever.

The teachers are a great asset. The amount of care and attention they provide exceeds expectations. I go to class every morning knowing that I have their full backing and support. Lessons are broken down into very simple and concise parts, our nursing labs are fully equipped with state of the art tools and our lesson plans are setup to match the current needs of the work force.

The students are very welcoming and ready to interact. I have made friends who have become family. The multicultural environment made settling in a lot easier. Finding my way around during the first few weeks of admission was no problem because staff are always ready to direct you to your destination.

I am happy I made The Gordon my study destination; I could not have had it any better.

Life in Kardinia International College

For me, it is my first time being so far away from home by myself. Living in an unfamiliar country and study makes my life full of challenge. I couldn’t tell how I exactly feel. Excited? Passionate? Confused? Or scared? However, every time when I met some problems I was able to overcome them, with the help from others and myself. Everyone in Kardinia are trying their best to make me feel like home. And I enjoy the campus, especially in spring. It is pretty to study at some place where flowers bloom. As the only child in my family, I never know how life will be with children sharing everything with me. But my homestay family gives me the opportunity to experience it. Our house is always full with children’s laughing, gigging and even crying. I love it. During the weekend, I usually hang out with my friends. We go shopping, watch movie, go rock climbing or go to some Chinese restaurant. Geelong is not as big as Melbourne, but it is such a fantastic city near by a beautiful bay. When the breeze kisses my face and brings me a salty taste, I really feel the enjoyment and peace that comes from the deep shiny ocean. I miss my family, my home and my country. But I know they would be more than happy for me if I could take a good care of myself and live happily. It is a path to independence, and I am on my way. I can see all the new challenges are waving to me. I believe the effect of hard working. And I hope everything will come through in the following year.

Good things of Kardinia International College

Kardinia International College (KIC) is a globalised school because many overseas students who are from around the world and KIC students study together. We can learn cultural differences from overseas students and improve the level of our education.

KIC students are kind, friendly and caring so when I ask them to help me, they always help me tenderly. The teachers are also kind and helpful so we can ask them questions unhesitatingly. They also provide us good education. They help us expand our knowledge.

There are a lot of good facilities for students to study at KIC. We have new buildings called “The Learning Commons” and “Senior Centre”. They provide us a lot of studying materials and let us concentrate to study.

We always use our own tablet computers to study. Information-organised society has been developed nowadays and KIC provides us an opportunity to use laptops at school. Because of that, we will be able to do well in information-organised society in the future.

We can get high levelled education and expand our knowledge through studying at KIC. We also can make friends with a lot of kind students. Our life at KIC is filled with joy.
