International Students are Welcomed to Geelong

Thursday, 23 March 2017

Over 130 international students experienced a range of Aussie games at the Study Geelong International Student Welcome last Thursday. From throwing thongs into buckets to trying their footy hand-balling skills at a target, the students participated in a range of activities at the Geelong Waterfront.

The event was opened by the Member for Geelong, Ms Christine Couzens. “Victoria is leading the country in international education, and we’re proud to support a community of 175,000 international students”, stated Ms Couzens. “Whatever stage you’re at on your educational journey there are many options to choose from at one of Geelong’s centres for educational excellence.”

The students that attended came from secondary schools, English language course providers and tertiary institutions across the Geelong region. The highlight for many students was the Welcome to Country and didgeridoo performance by Wadawurrung Woman, Corinna Eccles and didgeridoo player, Norm Stanley.

The students enjoyed a BBQ dinner and were provided with a welcome bag containing information on what to see and do in the Geelong region. The event, an initiative of Study Geelong’s thirteen education providers and Tourism Greater Geelong & The Bellarine, was supported by Study Melbourne through the International Student Welfare program.
