Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is having a major impact across the globe. Our thoughts are with everyone during this challenging time, including our international student community.

This is a rapidly changing situation, so we encourage you to stay up-to-date by regularly checking in with your education provider, or visiting the Study Melbourne website that has links to resources, advice and updates, from the Federal and Victorian governments. You can access their FAQ page here for answers to frequently asked questions. It is important to access information from credible sources, to ensure it is factual, reliable and up to date. 

International students can access the ongoing services of the Study Melbourne Student Centre (including access to mental health services and referral to other services) by emailing info@studymelbourne.vic.gov.au or if it is urgent call 1800 056 449.

Relief Fund

International Student Emergency Relief Fund

On 29 April 2020, the Victorian Government announced a $45 million fund to support international students in Victoria facing hardship as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The fund is being delivered in partnership with Victoria’s tertiary education providers.The International Student Emergency Relief Fund will provide a payment of up to A$1,100 for vulnerable international students who have lost their job or had a significant reduction to their employment and are facing financial hardship as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The International Student Emergency Relief Fund will be delivered in two streams.
Stream One is for international students enrolled with a public university or TAFE in Victoria. Please visit International Student Emergency Relief Fund – information for University and TAFE students for more information.
Stream Two is for international students enrolled with a private education provider or college in Victoria. Please visit International Student Emergency Relief Fund – information for private training provider students for more information about how to apply.

  • hardship funds and student support services through education institutions
  • CatholicCare, Geelong, provides Emergency Relief in the form of financial or material aid to assist people experiencing financial hardship resulting from their current life situation or an unexpected crisis event - including the COVID-19 pandemic. International students are eligible to apply. Further information can be accessed here.

  • one-off rent relief grants for people in rental hardship due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic
  • help to find new work opportunities through Working for Victoria
  • a dedicated international student coronavirus (COVID-19) support hub on the Study Melbourne website 
  • free and confidential support and practical help (including accommodation and employment legal adiuce) through the Study Melbourne Student Centre including access to mental health services and referral to other services - see above.
  • free legal advice through Barwon Community Legal Sevice by calling them on 1300 430 599. If you are a Deakin University student you can access the Deakin Student Legal Service (DSLS) that provides free and confidential legal advice, information, referral and education through BCLS qualified lawyers over the phone. You can request an appointment here.
